Baynes Sound Stewardship Initiative (BSSI) (Est. 1995):

This program addresses non-point source pollution in Baynes Sound. For more information on the Baynes Sound Stewardship Initiative, contact

* Storm Drain Monitoring (1996-2000)

Forty volunteers monitor 60 storm drains in urban areas, testing for fecal coliform, pH, temperature, detergents, greases and oils. As a direct result of this citizen monitoring program, local municipalities repaired over 75 sewage/stormwater cross-connections to prevent untreated wastes from entering Baynes Sound.

* Agricultural Program (1997-98)

This educational campaign reached almost 100 rural property owners, many of whom participated in streamside fencing, re-vegetation and manure management projects and workshops aimed at preventing excessive damage to sensitive riparian areas. Almost 5800 metres of fencing were installed to restrict livestock access to streams. Over 5,000 trees and shrubs were planted by volunteers along riparian zones and dozens of manure covers were given away to hobby farmers.

* Survey and Education of Businesses (1999)

Over 100 businesses have been surveyed about toxic chemical use and disposal, with the aim of determining the need for a local collection and treatment facility. The project includes the distribution of educational materials, public workshops, and discounted advertising for "green" businesses.

* Biofiltration Wetland (1999)

This pilot project included the construction of a wetland in a residential area to filter stormwater and septic wastes.

* Pump-out Facilities and Boater Education (1999-2000)

In conjunction with community partners, boater pump-out facilities will be constructed in Comox Harbour and Deep Bay. A boater education program and celebration of clean water will also be provided.
